The short answer
This website doesn’t use cookies. We don’t set our own, and we don’t load anybody else’s.
It does keep five small things in your browser’s own storage, and asks you for one.
What’s a cookie again?
A cookie is a small file your browser sends back to a server on every request. Local storage is a note your browser keeps for one website and never sends anywhere. It stays on your device. Our server cannot read it, and no other website can either.
We keep crumbs for your website experience
Five things, all local storage, all on this site only.
- joy.theme · light or dark, so the page opens the way you left it.
- joy.sound · on or off, so you don’t hear a mechanical keyboard if you don’t want to.
- joy.standards · a single 1, once you have found the command line on the keyboard. An easter egg.
- joy.counted · yes or no, whether we may count your use of Joy Standards.
- joy.checks followed by today’s date · a number from 0 to 5, so the checker can tell you how many of the five free checks you have left. Only today’s is kept.
None of them holds a name, an address, an identifier, or anything about the work you checked. Nothing is sent anywhere. Together they are under a hundred characters.
Seeing the Joy Standards in use
When you run a piece of work through the standard, Joy would like to count whether you came back and did it again. The count sits against a number made from your network address and a secret thrown away every month, so it cannot be turned back into you, and two months of it cannot be joined up. It holds how many days, how many checks, and whether you joined. No address, no name, nothing about the work.
No answer, no tracking. If you answered yes and changed your mind, clearing site data for this website removes your answer and brings the question back. Any questions, write to hello@feeljoy.ai, and we’ll get back to you.
No third parties
The site loads everything from its own address: the fonts, the drawings, the sounds, the code. No analytics, no advertising, no tag manager, no embedded video, no social buttons, no fonts called in from elsewhere. The only external links are to sound credits in the footer, ordinary links. No bells, no whistles.
This is checked rather than intended: a test reads the built site and fails if anything in it ever points somewhere else for a file, and it runs on every change.
Clean your slate
Clearing site data for this website in your browser’s settings removes all five. The page carries on working: it will follow your system setting for light and dark again, the sound will be on again, and the checker will ask the server how many checks you have left rather than knowing already. It will also have forgotten your answer to the question, so it’ll ask again. Browsing privately does the same thing by itself, because nothing survives the window closing.
If your browser blocks storage altogether, the page handles it. Every read and write here is wrapped so that a refusal is simply a page that does not remember, rather than a page that breaks.
What the server keeps instead
Three things, none of them on your device.
Our hosting keeps ordinary server logs, including your IP address, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.
When you use the checker, Joy keeps a one-way hash of your IP address and the date, with a count against it, for one day, because the five free checks a day have to be counted somewhere you cannot clear. It holds nothing but that number, it cannot be turned back into your address, and it is never near the piece you checked. The piece itself is not stored at all: it goes to the model, the result comes back to your browser, and neither is written down.
Joy keeps a daily tally of how many visits, checks and sign-ups happened and roughly where in the world they came from, by country. It is counters: a number for each country for each day, kept for thirteen months so one year can be read against the one before it. It is counted as each request arrives, not drawn from the returning-visitor record, so saying no to the question in section 4 takes nothing out of it and puts nothing into it. It points at nobody, and it is always on, because counting that seven checks happened in one country on one day is not a fact about any person.
And if you answered yes in section 4, a record of your returning, for a month: three numbers against a salted hash, described above. Saying no, or saying nothing, means it is never written. Clearing site data for this website forgets your answer, and the question comes back.
The privacy policy covers all three in full, including your right to object, to ask what is held about you, to have it deleted, and to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
The Joy app is a different thing
This page is about this website. Joy itself has accounts, and an account needs a session cookie to keep you signed in and to keep somebody else out. That is the only kind it uses, and it is covered by the privacy policy.
Changes
If what this website stores ever changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves. The list in section 3 is the whole list on the day it is dated.
